A joint workshop, held at ETSI, Sophia Antipolis, FR, this week was an opportunity to share high-level information about the 3GPP and O-RAN plans and respective efforts on 6G standardization.
There is a strong commitment, across industry to encourage an efficient approach to the development of radio access network related 6G specifications, to help the eco-system to make progress for the benefit of the industry generally and the users specifically.
The workshop had over 400 registered participants, with around 110 attending in person.
Puneet Jain, TSG SA Chair, described how 3GPP works in specification groups, with detailed work carried out in Working Groups. He drew attention to the workshops held in 3GPP on 6G use cases and more recently (March 2025) on plans for 6G studies as part of Rel-20 (3GPP Introduction in 3ORW-250002).
Axel Klatt, TSG RAN Vice-chair, spoke directly about the TSG RAN aspects. The 6G first radio study has started and is due in June 2026, with detailed WG study work continuing until June 2027. TSG RAN and the other groups timing is largely aligned with the ITU timeline for IMT-2030.
Chih-Lin I, O-RAN Alliance Technical Steering Committee Chair presented the Alliance vision on 6G and the work of the O-RAN Next Generation Research Group (Presentation 3ORW-250034), emphasising the synergies between 3GPP and O-RAN Alliance for the 6G era.
Discussions in the first session were wrapped up by Kei Andou, representing multiple O-RAN Alliance members on a potential work split on 6G. His presentation (3ORW-250020) focused on areas such as architectural frameworks, interfaces, management systems, AI/ML, and security capabilities.
After the morning break on day 1, the agenda moved on to company presentations dedicated to future Interaction between 3GPP and O-RAN (see documents …here).
Following the final session, the workshop Chair presented a summary of the discussions over the two days (3ORW-250035). Although the workshop summary is non-binding, these discussions have been very positive, contributing to a better mutual understanding between 3GPP and O-RAN Alliance experts.
The workshop was hosted in ETSI, a highly appropriate location, as the Institute is at the heart of 3GPP and also provides the O-RAN Alliance with a process to make its specifications publicly available (See ETSI Mobile Standards Group Technical Committee web page).
